The problem
A mould shop machining hardened steel cavities was replacing tools before the finishing pass was complete.
- Tool wear part-way through the finishing pass
- Unstable surface quality in deep cavities
- Frequent re-setting of the operation
What we changed
A tougher grade and a coating suited to interrupted cutting were selected, together with a revised step-down strategy.
The result
Tool life extended and the finishing pass could be completed with one tool per cavity.
