The problem

Heat resistant alloy components were meeting dimensional tolerance but failing surface roughness requirements on curved surfaces.

• Surface roughness above specification on curved faces
• Heat build-up at the cutting edge
• Short tool life in heat resistant alloy

What we changed

A ball nose geometry with a matched coating was selected and step-over was recalculated to keep scallop height inside the requirement.

The result

Surface roughness met the requirement and the operation no longer needed a separate polishing step.
